The harness has become the favourite walking accessory for many owners of small and medium dogs. But it still has to be chosen well: a poorly fitted harness can rub, slip, or let your dog wriggle out. Here are the criteria that really matter.
1. A harness that spares the neck
The first benefit of a harness is that it spreads the pull across the chest rather than the neck. When your dog pulls or darts sideways, the pressure is not concentrated on the throat, as it is with a collar. This is especially welcome for small dogs, puppies learning to walk on a leash, or dogs that pull a lot.
2. The right size comes first
A harness that is too big lets your dog back out and free itself; too small, it pinches and irritates the armpits. The breed gives a good indication, but nothing beats measuring: within the same breed, builds vary a great deal.
At Willow & Co, our harnesses range from XS to M, for small and medium dogs. Our size guide by breed gives you the recommended size in seconds, and our article How to measure your dog explains how to take the measurements.
3. Adjustments for a precise fit
Choose an adjustable harness, with adjustment buckles. They let you adapt the harness to your dog's build, and change it if their weight changes or their coat thickens in winter.
The right fit: you should be able to slide two fingers flat between the harness and your dog's body, everywhere. No more, no less.
4. A pleasant, easy-care material
A harness is often worn for a long time, so the material matters. A soft fabric limits rubbing, and a machine-washable harness makes life easier after a muddy walk.
Our harnesses come in beige or red corduroy, soft to the touch, and in tartan neoprene, a soft, light material that dries quickly. All of them go in the washing machine at 30 °C.
5. A sturdy back attachment
Check where the leash attaches. A ring on the back of the harness is the most common and the simplest for everyday use: it does not get in the way of the front legs and the leash does not pass under the belly.
6. And what about style?
A harness is on show! If you like a coordinated look, match it with the collar, leash and poop bag holder. That is the idea behind our complete sets: all four pieces in the same fabric, for less than buying them separately.
In short
- A harness spreads the pull across the chest and spares the neck.
- Measure your dog rather than relying on the breed alone.
- Choose an adjustable model, set to leave room for two fingers.
- A soft, machine-washable material makes everyday life simpler.
