How to measure your dog to find the right size

Neck, chest, the two-finger rule and what to do between two sizes: the simple method for choosing a harness and collar.

Ordering the right size first time is possible: you just need to measure your dog properly. Allow two minutes, a tape measure, and perhaps a treat to keep them still.

What you need

A soft tape measure, like a dressmaker's. Failing that, take a piece of string, mark it at the right place, then measure it flat with a ruler.

1. The neck

Measure at the base of the neck, where the collar naturally sits. The tape should be snug without being tight. This measurement is used to choose the collar, and it is also the one we use in our guide.

2. The chest

For a harness, also measure the chest: the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. Keep this measurement handy: it will help you adjust the harness.

3. The two-finger rule

Once the accessory is on, you should be able to slide two fingers flat between it and your dog's body. Less, and it is too tight. More, and your dog may slip out of it.

4. Between two sizes?

Take the larger size. Our harnesses and collars tighten easily with their adjustment buckles, whereas a model that is too small cannot be made bigger.
